On October 23, 2015, Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) Yogyakarta in cooperation with academic community at SMP Negeri 12 Yogyakarta held a workshop in creating interactive digital learning material. In this occasion Minecraft was used as a key tools for material development.
This workshop was attended almost all of the teachers at SMP N 12 and some people from community. This was opened by Dr. Ridi Ferdiana as Research and Education Advisor MIC Yogyakarta. In the opening presentation, he conveyed a wide range of modern educational approach with digital based learning material. It was also presented about some software from Microsoft (other than Microsoft) that can support the needs of content development of game-based, such as Kodu Game Labs and ProjectSpark.
In the second session of workshop was trained by Arya Adhitya Nugraha and Daniel Rinaldi as trainer team from MIC. The trainer delivered the material starting from recognizing functionality menu in Minecraft, creating object up to arranging the story that will be developed by the user. Some simulation scenarios on modelling learning material in classroom were also be demonstrated to inspire the teachers when they arrange digital learning material with Minecraft.
The third was creative session. After understanding the use of Minecraft software, the participants were requested to create creative content which met their teaching subject. Although, most of the participants used the Minecraft in their first experience, many of them succeeded in creating the learning simulation.
One of them was simulated on history subject that was created by Edy Thomas, one of the teachers from SMP N 12 Yogyakarta. In the creative session, Thomas simulated Nasional Monument called as (Monas) as a simulation and introduction learning material that will be presented in the classroom. There were also simulated a variety of geometry in a form of 3D for mathematic subject.
This workshop was started at 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. In addition, this workshop had goals to open new insight for educators, especially in Yogyakarta, that in this digital era there are various teaching methods that be implemented to teach the students in the class. The teachers were enthusiast in learning this material because digital game is one of the games which become the students’ interest. It is hoped that by using this media it can show effectiveness in delivering the material in the class.
