On Tuesday November 17, 2015, there were 1000 students from Yogyakarta gathered at Pusat Kebudayaan Koesnadi Hardjosoemantri UGM to attend the opening of Microsoft YouthSpark 2015. In this event, Microsoft collaborated with Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB) as connector to the participants and Microsoft Innovation Center UGM to do incubation.
Microsoft YouthSpark is a global initiative from Microsoft which aimed to explore the youths in using technology, so it can help them to do more things for themselves, families, groups, and communities. Yogyakarta was chosen because there are many creative youths who are potential in accelerating the Yogyakarta development as a smart city.
In this event, MIC Yogyakarta invited the guest to do game programming with Kodu Game Labs. Guided by Research and Education Advisor MIC Yogyakarta Dr. Ridi Ferdiana, the participants programed a simple game with theme of understanding Yogyakarta stones. Ridi delivered various benefits from programming, and gave insight to the participants about digital game nowadays.
In the term of November 2015 – May 2015, participants will follow series events starting from idea submission, selection, idea emphasizing, and incubation in developing game application. Kodu Game Labs is a prime application that will be used to develop game product. Besides having fancy look, this application also provides visual programming language, so it can be adapted more by children, especially most of the participants come from underprivileged.
