Workshop: Learning Through Digital Game Medium


Digital game or known as game is one of interactive content that is most used by the user of computing technology. Mobile device, tablet up to computer PC are install game application in their devices. Likewise children, the teachers or staff members really like game, and many of them are even crazy in gaming.

To anticipate this issues, it needs a more educative approach. Prohibiting to play games seems like a useless act. Thus, converting them into something more useful is the right choice. MIC Yogyakarta in cooperation with BTKP D.I Yogyakarta had initiative to make learning design with the use of digital games as a connector medium.


On November 30, 2015, held at training lab of BTKP Yogyakarta, to realize the vision that had been mentioned above, MIC Yogyakarta held workshop that invited 30 teachers across Yogyakarta. This workshop taught them how to create teaching strategies with the use of games media. Some of game concept was presented in this workshop. Game in Code.org, Minecraft and Kodu Game Labs became the main material in this occasion.

In the first session, participants was invited to comprehend the basic logic to create programming, and this became a base for gamming. By trying this game in Code.org that is a part of global initiative “Hours of Code” the teachers learned how the concept of computer science work, and they did some creativity using Minecraft application.  

Some of participants had successfully created digital simulation for their teaching and learning in the classroom with the use of Minecraft. The workshop was continued with the introduction Kodu Game Labs. Kodu Game Labs is a software with an interactive design that teaches programming skill and design an interactive game. The participants were so enthusiast to follow this workshop.

It is hoped that this workshop provides the current solutions on how to use digital technology in the classroom. Afterward, this also encourages students to be more excited to study because we delivered the material using preferred media.
